In a little over six months, the United States will celebrate its semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Expect discourse on the meaning of America to be more prominent and more contested over the coming months. Not that we haven’t had a healthy dose over the past decade, which will almost certainly be historicized as "the Trump era" despite Joe Biden’s four year interlude in the White House.
To quote the meme phrase: "America is more divided than ever."
But in historical moments, there is a deep desire for unity, at least in the abstract. How it could possibly be achieved is the real question….
