href="https://www.welcomejpeg.com/p/re-your-request-for-an-interview">Post-Peak Kanyeverse or Bianca Censori's anti-interview in Welcome Magazine

There was a lull in the Kanyeverse this year. Last fall, there was the theatrical debut of the documentary In Whose Name?, then in the spring the release of his new album, Bully and the accompanying stadium tour. Like so many cultural events, it was a flash in the pan; things people spoke about for a week or two then went silent on.

It's hard to keep burning bright. And burn bright Kanye did with his stream of 2010s hits, marriage to Kim Kardashian, and successful brand, Yeezy.

But then, of course, came the manic dumpster fire: the Twitter rants, the presidential run, the divorce, the implosion of Yeezy, the Alex Jones appearance, and on and on. Britney peaked the moment before she shaved her head. Kanye did so when he tweeted he was "going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE."

Still, there were embers throughout his apologies for antisemitism and their reversals. (Remember his post-apology-tour song "Heil Hitler"?) But when crazy becomes the steady state people stop thinking about it as crazy anymore. The taboo around playing a Kanye track withered. All my friends went to his show at SoFi stadium. Kanye no longer burns bright like the sun, but he still has gravitational pull.

With the arrest and deportation of his one-time chief of staff Milo Yiannopoulos and the announcement of new tour dates, he's flickering. Though the most interesting work from the Kanyeverse didn't come from him, but his current wife Bianca Censori, who responded to an interview request from Welcome Magazine with one of the best essays I've encountered in a while.

Censori doesn't want to be interviewed: "Words, especially written words, are sanitized in real time - snatched out of the air and nailed down." She sees the performance of the self as a creative act and is wary of capturing the ambiguity of life in something so fixed as words. According to Censori, "Plasticity refuses permanence. It refuses the fantasy that a person can be cleanly defined, captured, stabilised, or fully known."

Though, of course, that's precisely what she does in her response, even as she resists.

What does the uncanny mean to me?

It is the moment something is destroyed and reborn into something new and familiar, but at the same time peculiar. My husband and I were reading about bipolar episodes when I came across something an anonymous reddit poster wrote that stayed with me.

They said bipolar disorder makes you realize your sense of self isn't tied to your actions, beliefs, or ethics, like everyone thinks it is. Because all of those can dissolve and reconfigure, depending on your state of mind. The only thing that remains consistent, the only thing that might be true, is your ability to reflect on them.

Kanye was the king of what I once described as the "HYPEBEAST | WOKE" era from 2016 to 2020. He was instrumental to the rise of streetwear and even if he himself was conspicuously anti-woke, his denouncements only prove how influential wokeness was in that era.

I now have friends born after "Through the Wire" was released in 2003. In the glimmer of their eyes, I see the merciless nostalgia cycle churning on. Perhaps when 2010s nostalgia fully hits, we'll see him rise once again.

Pre-Peak Return of Rock or Echo Park Rising

When I first declared a return of rock, inspired by conversations with my friend and collaborator Sophie Secaf, it was more of a provocation than a diagnosis; something that seemed inevitable, even if the only signal I was working off of was The Strokes 2020 New Year's concert at Barclays Center.

I remember a friend asking how exactly that would happen. Do kids even play guitars? I forwarded him some TikTok accounts of Zoomers shredding in finished basements. That was six years ago. The teens are twentysomethings.

Last weekend, at Echo Park Rising, I may have even seen some of them. The neighborhood block party in its first full-scale edition in years was overrun this year and featured (according to organizers) hundreds of bands playing in bars and restaurants and on street corners, dissonant sets overlapping up and down Sunset, crowds of young Angelenos in dirty tees and ripped stockings sipping tall boys and eating street tacos between sets.

More than the success of Geese or the Hedi boy renaissance, this made me feel like the return of rock was underway. There were no industry plants. There was no hype. There was instead a lot of good music and more than anything, there was an audience for it.

Techno-Fatalism or David Wallace-Wells on the techlash

Techno-Optimism or Ruby Justice Thélot on the techlash

Wallace-Wells evaluates the following causes of the backlash:

If you call it simple environmentalism, you have to reckon with the fact that coal plants are less unpopular. If you call it NIMBYism, you need to reckon with the fact that just three years ago, Americans said they supported the construction of solar farms in their communities by three to one and nearly the same for wind farms. If you call it anti-corporate backlash, you need to reckon with the fact that support for nearby Amazon distribution centers was higher and that generic factories, semiconductor plants and even nuclear power plants all polled better than data centers, too.

If you call it a turn against Silicon Valley or delayed payback for a decade or two of its broken promises, you have to account for the fact that Americans not only obsessively use tech products but also tend to view many of the big tech companies favorably. If you call it know-nothing tech derangement, you have to make sense of the relative popularity of computer chip fabrication plants. If you call it the paranoid style of American politics in the social media era, you have to explain how it could be that more than three-quarters of Americans got Covid shots in 2021 and how data center opposition is much larger than movements against earnest causes like fracking and fringier ones like opposition to 5G. If you call it the thinly felt politics of TikTok vibes and predict they'll probably evaporate, you may be somewhat right. You still have to explain why no other recent cause has generated as tall a mountain of negative vibes.

I think he glosses over the possibility that the data center backlash was caused by a general "turn against Silicon Valley." For one, it's been well established that many tech products are addictive. Are we surprised addicts "obsessively" use products they are addicted to? Two, do Americans really view big tech companies favorably? I think that's contested, as shown by Ruby Justice Thélot's recent article for a16z and the 404 Media reply from Emanuel Maiberg.

Thélot uses American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) scores to argue a similar point to Wallace-Wells. Instagram—like the major airlines and Budweiser beer—scores high on consumer satisfaction. That's true. But when 404 Media's Maiberg digs into what this means, the picture becomes much more ambivalent:

Here are the type things customers are asked to evaluate with a score of 0-100 in the survey this rising satisfaction score for social media: "Quality of mobile app, reliability of mobile app (minimal down time, crashes, lags), loading speed and reliability, ease of navigation, ease of using the site on different devices, speed and reliability of video clips, variety of services and information, freshness of content, relevance of content, ability to use site without disruption, personal relevance of ads seen."

Customers scored all these aspects of social media highly (between 68 and 84), and I agree with their evaluation. Instagram loads really fast. I can scroll videos on TikTok very quickly. I watched one YouTube Short about Warhammer 40,000 lore, and then was served more than a dozen other YouTube Shorts about Warhammer 40,000 lore that were both fresh and relevant. I do not contest any of this and I don't think that is why both my friends in the DSA and my Trump supporting family members agree that Instagram is bad.

If we wanted to find out why Americans have negative feelings about social media or why we think these platforms are enshittifying, we might ask questions like: Does using Instagram make you feel good? Do you think children younger than 13 should have unlimited access to TikTok? Has Facebook been a net positive for your family?

Let's look at some other data. A recent survey from The Searchlight institute found that voters "overwhelmingly believe social media has a negative impact on society." Last year, an Emerson College poll found that Americans have low confidence in information they get from social media and that social media platforms are most responsible for the creation of "fake news." In 2021, the Cato Institute found that 75 percent of Americans don't trust social media to make fair content moderation decisions. In August, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that three in five Americans support stronger oversight of social media companies. 35 percent said social media stressed them out. 52 percent said they spend too much time on social media. A Pew poll in July found that 6 in 10 Americans supported a social media ban for kids under 16.

404 Media is an explicitly tech-critical publication, just like a16z's Substack is an explicitly pro-tech publication. But taking bias into account, I still think 404 Media won this round.

More reading from last week:

<a Artificial intelligence is now sophisticated enough to begin improving itself, unlocking a feedback loop of ever-accelerating progress and growth. This is how superhuman artificial intelligence will be built. Again, so we're told.

Over the summer, Sam Altman and Elon Musk declared the singularity had begun. Stripe, the digital payments processor, even gave it a start date: January 1, 2026.

We're in the phase of the AI hype cycle I would like to call crying singularity.

This won't be the last time a tech founder announces to investors or their favorite podcast host that something momentous is underway. I don't doubt that something very big is happening.

But declaring that the singularity is underway is a historic pronouncement. The singularity is on par with the Industrial and Neolithic Revolutions in its implications. These were events so transformative that it's difficult for us to conceptualize life before modern technology—let alone agriculture. Each revolution was a Rubicon. There's no looking back. I mean that literally. The pre-industrial world could not support the billions of people alive on Earth today.

So you would think the American public might care. Seemingly, they don't. The story has been buried by public backlash against data centers, the settlement of a lawsuit alleging that Facebook and Instagram were designed to harm children, and an online spat between the Federal Trade Commission and Y Combinator over H-1B visas.

Tech claims they are building a new world and Americans shrug.

There are a few reasons why.

Insiders insist: THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT! It's not a bubble, but for the most part, those making this argument are talking their book.

They're invested. They're biased.

But for the sake of argument, let's say this time isn't different. The general contours of AI look like the dot-com boom of the nineties, when companies like Pets.com famously landed landed investment wildly disproportionate to any revenue they could credibly deliver.

From a distance, it's obvious that the investors' "irrational exuberance" (as then-Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan put it) was not a question of if the internet would be profitable, but when.

If the same principle applies to AI (i.e. the bubble is not a question of if these companies are profitable, but when they will be profitable), we should prepare for another market "correction" (i.e. stock market crash).

And with AI accounting for something like 30% of GDP growth, the consequences will be devastating.

who will be blamed?

Tech.

As I wrote yesterday, the techlash is already in its second round, this time with the focus being on data centers rather than social media. I knew tech was unpopular, but I was honestly surprised to find out just how badly they are polling.

With the Democrats running against data centers, and Republicans threatening to do the same unless tech can convince the public their businesses will benefit the communities that house them, a bubble popping seems all the more likely.

How can Big AI build out the infrastructure they need to achieve profitability on a reasonable timetable if the general public is in opposition? Was this level of opposition priced into the huge investments already made into AI?

I doubt it.

so what happens next

It seems data centers are so wildly unpopular, support for them is now a political kiss of death. From Axios:

They tell us internal polls show data centers are as popular as spent nuclear waste, and more broadly have become a proxy for feelings about AI.

AI is as popular as nuclear waste. Incredible.

The memo was addressed not only to Republicans, but also to executives at AI companies. The subtext is clear: if you want our political support, you have to generate the public support. Directly from the NRSC memo:

Campaigns or party committees cannot fix the toxic brand of an entire segment of the economy. The companies that need these projects built have to fix how Ohioans see them: who benefits, who pays, and why a community should want one. Until that happens, the issue will continue to dominate this race. If it is still this potent in November, elected officials everywhere will treat Ohio as their reason to work against data centers in the future. If voters' perceptions of data centers are not fixed quickly, the campaign against them will expand far beyond Ohio.

There's no exaggeration here. The polls for local data center development are shockingly bad. "Look how hot and cool and smart everyone is!" "We are awesome!" They are attempting to mog, but trying to do it nicely. The tone combines the braggadocio of Andrew Tate with the earnest inclusivity of an HR lady. It's stilted. Can you be elitist and egalitarian? But then again, it is a corporate photo-op.

At least they don't call each other "rock stars."

These sorts of images really should stay in the group chat, and if there is some pressing reason to share, keep them on LinkedIn, or as a last resort, if you're truly desperate for the attention, a walled garden like Instagram or Snapchat. But since this photo was taken in San Francisco, no caution will be exercised. It will be posted on the cruelest of all social media platforms, X.

Tech Twitter still exists, even if the name is now anachronistic. The poster hopes to generate a respectable number of impressions within his local scene. Ironically, the technologically adept locals who hang out on that part of the platform are often blind to the animal spirits that run wild online. They know how X works, but they don't know people. When the post goes viral and users from outside Silicon Valley's sandbox begin piling on, the replies give them a brutal introduction to the average internet user.

The average internet user isn't a friendly nerd.

Girls who insist they are hot are derided as ugly. Parties that insist they are cool are mocked as lame. Ivy League graduates are reminded that many of their fellow alumni are seemingly illiterate. Reddit posters brag about their high TC (total compensation), only to have their low SMV (sexual market value) shoved in their faces. Eyes roll every time a new day-in-the-life video is posted to TikTok, detailing the snacks eaten, meetings attended, and naps taken at yet another open-plan corporate office. Do these professionals even do any work at their fake email jobs? The internet wonders.

These are the strivercels. And the rage they elicit and the vicious comments they receive whenever one of their posts goes viral is the Strivercel Effect.

By which I mean, the original boomtown is booming once again. Gone are the days of doom-loop discourse. And as with every new fountain of wealth, the courtiers and consultants are carpetbagging to the Bay.

They say, during the Gold Rush, the people that sold the shovels did better than the miners who dug with them. I wonder if that will be true today…

I don't know anyone selling shovels. (I suppose keeping with the metaphor, shovels would be chips today.) But I do know quite a lot of people selling status services: art advising, styling, decorating and designing. And I've heard stories of a lucrative market for etiquette classes.

In so many ways, our current tech boom is the inverse of the last. Feel-good grand narratives are in short supply. Facebook is no longer trying to connect the world. Rather, AI companies caution that they may be building Satan in a black box. There's no Zuckerberg-style Revenge of the Nerds middle-finger antics this round. Instead, tech seems, for the first time, anxious about how both institutional America (i.e. the government) and the American public-at-large receive them.

This may be as simple as the fact that this round's boom doesn't seem to be translating into prosperity for the masses. Or, more worryingly, that the general distrust and dislike of the tech industry will make building the infrastructure necessary for the roll-out impossible. You need community buy-in to build new energy infrastructure, data centers, and chip fabricators.

This round, Silicon Valley is trying to learn from past mistakes. They imagined themselves outsiders, disruptors. But now they seem to want to be let into the fold. They're looking beyond the tech industry bubble at the status signifiers that enamor, well, everyone else.

Despite its post-Google-bus reputation, San Francisco isn't the worst place to figure this out. Not so long ago, tech was not the dominant industry in the city. San Francisco has a patrician tradition dating back to its once-upon-a-time status as the largest city on the West Coast. In the nineties, the stereotypical San Franciscan was not a software engineer. The city was defined by Beat poets, hippie artists, gay sailors, and old-money California families.

There seems to be the desire to harken back to this, to remind people of the San Francisco of Pacific Heights rather than SoMa. That’s why everyone is going pygmalion mode. Like Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play, Pygmalion, they hope a more refined affect will convince people Silicon Valley is up to the task of guiding us through whatever the AI boom might bring: economic catastrophe, the singularity, the apocalypse…

pygmalion mode

/pɪɡˈmeɪ.li.ən moʊd/ noun

1. The attempt by those from lower classes to affect the manners, diction, and taste of a higher caste — class passing as self-transformation, made newly conspicuous by the AI boom. Over dinner in Marseille: "Everyone in San Francisco is in pygmalion mode."

Origin: From George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (1913).

Not to be confused with: Pygmalion effect: psychology term for high expectations raising another’s performance (Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968).

Other neologisms I've encountered recently. Were we in a vibecession? Were the vibes shifting left and against the right? Was there a Kamala vibe shift? An anti-Trump vibe shift? Had woke returned, shifting the vibes once and for all?

Something I've noticed over these last five years is that vibes, like presidential elections, happen at the margins — and the shifts, like the political narratives that come in every election's wake, are attempts at making the marginal general. Trump may have won the popular and the electoral votes in November 2024, but did his 1.5% margin of victory really give him a sweeping mandate?

The big swings, like Reagan's blowout election in 1984, or the death of disco, just don't happen anymore. Even vulgar decade-ism feels inadequate to describe our present — though this may be more an artifact of our ability to see clearly congealed decades retrospectively, not when we are in the midst of them.

Vibes have become our preferred unit of measurement because they work well to describe a culture that is in the process of fragmenting. Vibe shift worked well to describe the moment millennials handed the baton to Gen Z as the stewards of youth culture because Gen Z will likely be the last generation to remember any semblance of a mainstream, just as millennials are the last generation to remember a time before the internet.

<a class="image-link image2 A comment from a subscriber alerted me to a new usage of the word among Gen Alpha—a new term now used for middle schoolers and younger. (I've already written that I’m not convinced our current generational schematic is correct—but let's go with it for the sake of this post.)

I asked Claude about the new Gen Alpha usage of the word and it replied with a cache of TikToks from the last two or three years: befuddled Gen X parents, middle school teachers, and memeologists all detailing Preppy Nation. The aesthetic is neon pink, frilly, features ubiquitous smiley faces and has a fascination with Stanley cups. It's counter-positioned to emo, which does feel in line with preppy's original meaning. In the eighties, preppiness was juxtaposed to punk and goth. In the nineties and 2000s, the same dichotomy prevailed but in a more productized suburban setting: Hot Topic vs. Abercrombie & Fitch.

If I were to add Preppy Nation to the chart, it would descend from Lilly Pulitzer and Abercrombie & Fitch, with a dose of Golden Goose and Love Shack Fancy—the tacky post–Gossip Girl brands that dominated the tween wardrobes of Upper East Side private girls some years href="https://archive.org/details/real-world-seattle-ep-17-1998">old seasons of The Real World on The Internet Archive. These were seasons not included on Paramount+: Boston, Seattle, New Orleans, Hawaii. Incidentally, the last good seasons of the series. They aired before the debut of Survivor (2000), the hit show that introduced mainstream America, not just MTV's youth audience, to unscripted content; before Paris Hilton's The Simple Life (2003) popularized the idea that reality television could be a vehicle for celebrity status. This was before the Writers Guild of America strike of 2007–2008 taught Hollywood that producers could craft narrative arcs just as well as writers.

Early participants in reality television, like David Burns from The Real World: Seattle, were innocents. The project was pitched as a social experiment—an interesting experience for those in their early twenties, uncertain about their place in the world—not a path to fame. But as he recounted in a 2019 Jezebel interview, by the time his season aired in 1998 the game had already changed:

It was a complete shock for me. I had gone on a study abroad trip to Morocco five days after we wrapped shooting. I went and lived in Fez and Marrakesh for an entire summer. I was in a different headspace. I actually kind of forgot that I had done the show. Then, when I got back, I got off the plane in JFK Airport and I was swarmed by people outside of customs. I had no idea what the fuck was going on.

Clavicular, of course, is nothing like David Burns, despite his content's uncanny resemblance to MTV's original unscripted franchise (the ambient apartment settings, the dark nightclub confrontations, the confessional asides to the camera, the socially relevant scandals). His rise to fame and notoriety was calculated. His onstream antics are calibrated to maximize outrage. He is a Chad in search of virality. All of which is true, and yet there is something experimental about his endeavor.

I'm not so sure he intended to overdose or to be sued for sexual assault. His forays into the grey market of peptides and body modifications have already had potentially life-altering side effects. (Clavicular claims he is infertile due to the testosterone and steroid protocol he began when he was 14.) In unguarded moments onstream—perhaps when the meth is wearing off—he looks exhausted. One wonders when the show airs 24/7, how long can it go on?

Harmony Korine claims streamers from Clavicular's generation are the new filmmakers, "iShowSpeed is a movie. Kai Cenat is a movie." Or, put even more grandiosely, "iShowSpeed is the new Tarkovsky." iShowSpeed is the new Road Rules, The Real World's Winnebago spin-off. His recent trip through Africa is just another iteration of the travel show, broadcast on Twitch rather than cable.

We are subscribermaxxing.
